Almost Over… or Just Begun?
I cannot believe that it has been six months since our first Governing Board meeting and the WASC year is half over! Being an optimistic person, I would like to say we have half left, but I am unsure whether it is better to see our progress or our promise as more positive. I digress; this is a very good problem to have! We have seen some great things happen in the past six months and this halfway point is the perfect time to take a step back.
Most recently, the Leadership Institute at the Kalahari was an exciting event that brought many new faces to the WASC. With both the JAM and SHS levels attending, the networking capabilities were endless. I met some great people and shared ideas about everything from Homecoming to fundraising to different ways to improve school spirit. Bob Tryanski was an excellent speaker and motivated each of us to reach out to the silent majorities of our schools to better every aspect of the community. The Institute featured the monumental potential the WASC has this year. The positive atmosphere generated enthusiasm as well as publicity for our fall summits.
On the brain right now are all the Regional Fall Summits! These highly anticipated events are exciting forums for councils in your region and I cannot wait to hear about each summit’s success. Any time you have a chance to interact with local schools can be the opportunity to start something amazing. Take a chance and see what ideas you walk away with.
Make sure your school is keeping up with the Spirit of Excellence portfolios! As a member of the selection committee, I want to see that your school is amazing in every way! I know how proud you all are of your programs and influence around your community so make sure I hear about it! With our streamlined forms, it is very simple to share your passions with us; just check the WASC website for information and documents.
It’s only November but we have already accomplished so much as schools, regions, and boards. There is so much exciting news about the state conference to come as well as the IGNITE conference. Stay tuned for those updates and get involved with some of our amazing programs. Every week we receive new members so there will be plenty of new faces to meet at the events. If your middle school or high school isn’t involved, make sure to invite them into the WASC!
Sometimes it seems like so much time has passed and other times tomorrow feels an eternity away; take three minutes today to reflect and set new goals. Relax your stuttering mind, still your typing fingers, and close your ambitious eyes. You deserve these one-hundred-and-eighty seconds: congratulate yourself, rejuvenate yourself, and set one new goal. It is always worth the time.
I hope your glass is always half full, your leadership journeys are never done, and your heart always open.
Best,
Courtney Guc
State SHS Vice-President
