Young Leaders Visit Madison to Lead On!

Elementary school students and advisors from eleven WASC Elementary Schools gathered on a cloudy Wednesday, October 17, at 8:30 AM in Madison, Wisconsin. Delegates met in the State Capitol Assembly Chambers to learn about important leadership skills, and build on the skills they already had.

The day started with ice breakers, led by State JAM President, Vlada Kot and State SHS Vice-President, Courtney Guc. Then, keynote speaker Kelda Roys was introduced. Representative Roys talked of the importance of our theme, “Play on. Build on. Lead on.”She encouraged delegates to “stay curious”, and “don’t be afraid to play.” Representative Roys also spoke of building– for themselves, their councils, and themselves, and finally she talked about her personal leadership journey, reminding delegates that anyone can be a leader.

Next, the delegates transitioned to the Madison Children’s Museum for breakout sessions, to learn about creativity, communication, and teamwork. Delegates were challenged to create a ‘leadership invention’ given limited time and supplies.  They had to figure out how to communicate without talking, and then work together to solve problems. They also learned about outstanding leadership qualities and found those qualities in themselves.

Throughout the day, the delegates impressed volunteers with their hard work and enthusiasm. They came up with new and creative solutions for problems, and everyone involved had fun.
